FBK is a research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. Each research area is assigned to a specific research Center, of which there are twelve totals. Information regarding the research Centers, their activities and production are available at .
In particular, the Digital Society Center of FBK () embraces the vision that digital technology has a pervasive impact on our lives and is reshaping our society. The challenge is to ensure that digital technology becomes a stepping stone to create a more sustainable, inclusive and secure society. In the Digital Society Center, this goal is achieved both by performing advanced research in key areas such as AI, Big Data, IoT, and by exploiting living labs and partnerships with companies to experiment innovative solutions able to meet key societal challenges. The center is composed of a multidisciplinary team of 80 researchers, technologists and managers (including PhD students) organized in 7 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the ICT domain and in 2 support units focusing on project management and on software development & technology maturation. The Digital Society Center has a vast experience in collaborative research, currently participating in more than 40 European and national projects and coordinating 5 of them.
Workplace Description
The positions are opened by the Digital Society Lab (DS Lab, ), an interdisciplinary research unit, which aims at exploiting research results to improve quality of life and increase sustainability in cities and other communities. The unit focuses on experimenting with new modalities of service delivery to citizens, innovative communication modalities between citizens and government, new forms of collaboration and participation, and new ways to explore and elaborate information. The application areas for DS Lab include smart mobility, environment sustainability, on-line services, citizen participation and education. DS Lab is currently involved in several research and innovation projects, in strong collaboration with other research units of FBK working on data science, AI, Human- Computer Interaction, as well as in product maturation and experimentation activities in the cities and territories of the Province of Trento.
Background information and description of research projects
These positions are offered within the following project: Progetto Bandiera PNC-A. 1. 3
FBK is internationally renowned for its research on Artificial Intelligence (AI), thanks to its 30+ years of experience in this field and its contributions in artificial vision, language processing, speech, machine learning, predictive models, automated planning and acting, knowledge representation, formal methods, and intelligent user interfaces.
In the scope of the regional Flagship Project on the "PNC-A. 1. 3 - Digitalization of the Public Administration of the Autonomous Province of Trento", FBK is leading the activity on “AI Data: Artificial Intelligence in the Public Administration System” (hereafter: PNC-A. 1. 3 - Prog. Bandiera - A IxPA). The goal is to define and validate a solution able to address in a systematic way the needs of AI by the Public Administration. The project requires to identify and further develop AI methods and techniques, including innovative ones, to integrate them into an AI software platform, and to experiment this solution on relevant use cases identified with the Autonomous Province of Trento. IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (CIS): 8ra and the FBK CAITE project
The 8ra Initiative is a strategic European endeavour dedicated to create a resilient and scalable digital infrastructure tailored to Europe’s needs. At its core is the Important Project of Common European Interest on Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS), bringing together 12 EU member states and about 120 industrial and research partners to drive Europe’s digital sovereignty. The main goal of IPCEI-CIS is to establish a " Multi- Provider Cloud- Edge Continuum" that operates independently of any single provider. This continuum embodies the seamless fusion of cloud and edge computing, enabling the flexible allocation of resources and applications between the cloud and the network edge. In 8RA, FBK is responsible for the project Cybersecurity & AI at the Edge (CAITE) whose aim is twofold. First, it aims to bring AI at the edge, by providing scalability and resource efficiency through the development of cooperative, distributed AI algorithms, optimising data, energy, and processing resources while adapting to the different computational environments and capabilities. Second, the project emphasises the creation of security, privacy-enhancing, and trust-aware services to ensure resilience and compliance in distributed AI-enabled applications. Three research centers of FBK cooperate and develop CAITE: the Augmented Intelligence Center, the Center for Cybersecurity, and the Digital Society Center.
